I don't understand the hate and the total BS in the front page comments regarding Hyundai and/or Genesis. What am I missing?

“Hurr durr Hyundai is a cheap Korean brand that made the Pony and I can’t make opinions for myself because outdated jokes and brand stereotypes allow me to blend in with a meaningless online community and finally feel loved in order to stave off the uselessness and futility of existence.”
Or something like that.

Not having read anything on the front page in the last few hours, I can only surmise that it has to do with Hyundai’s reputation. Those of us alive when Hyundai first came to the U.S. remember how bad they really were. Although I can attest that they’ve come a long way since then, that’s only because I drove a Sonata for a couple of months while my WRX was being repaired.
It’s hard to shake a bad reputation.

It says Hyundai on it, so it
must be
shit. Sort of like when those stupid Toyotas that surely can’t even make it down the road (why so few cylinders? Where’s the carb? What are these “overhead cam” things?) started appearing with Lexus badges. Noooo way it will take of.

The front page hates lots of stuff. It's basically the pink goo from Ghostbusters 2.

People who otherwise hold their not-a-racist-ism quite dear figure that as long as they bash a group everybody’s indifferent to as a group they can be the cool kid too. As with any such, it helps to have a seed, and KDM questionable-ness in the US market having once been on record, HA HA KOREA CANNOT INTO CAR and snorts of being a jaded carnoisseur ensue.

I like Hyundai a lot, and I like their new Genesis brand thing a lot. If Jalopnik/Oppo existed in 1989, you’d see the same stuff but substituting Toyota and Lexus for Hyundai and Genesis. Though in fairness, I think Lexus did what they did better than Genesis is doing what they’re doing.
My only issue with Hyundai was that they sold the Equus as a Hyundai but didn’t badge it as such, which spoke to me of a lack of faith in their brand. But now that Genesis is a marque rather than a model, it makes perfect sense.
All that said, the winged Genesis logo/badge looks SUPER CHEAP, like something from a Chinese Rolls Royce imposter, just a bad look full stop. Genesis is actually a great name for a luxury car, but that logo needs help.

didn’t Hyundai have a model AND a platform called “Genesis”?
and now it’s a “brand” ?
It’d be like Honda releasing a model called the Acura, the Honda Acura. And then a year later saying all their new cars will be built on the Acura platform. And then a year later announcing Acura is a brand now.

I don’t know. To me it seems to be doing a Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, or Nissan/Infiniti. I think if Hyundai tries, they could pull it off.

People are used to the old Hyundai, which made lots of boring, if not shitty cars. Now that that’s not the case (well, some have been pretty ugly though, at least) people are confused and don’t know which bag to punch.

I agree on all counts.
I’m really warming up to the Genesis and hope it sticks around as a brand, but I vividly remember the first time I saw an Equus. “Why does that car have an Aston logo?” Then I pulled out my phone and googled it. “Oh. It’s a Hyundai. I wonder if that guy paid extra for those badges. That’s sort of tacky.”

I was just reading through the comments, but I didn’t see anything terribly offensive. Of course, as with any car there will be a few people who just trash whatever car because that is what they do. Other than that it seems like its just the same few questions re worded.
Does it feel like 60k, does it feel like it can compete with other luxury cars, does it feel like a luxury car.

Damn it. Your comparison is more apt, since the Ghostbusters goo reacts positively to love, whereas the FP reacts to love by punching a kitten.

Reputations are built over decades.
Hyundai cannot simply try to “do what Lexus did in 1989.” Times have changed, tastes and demands have changed. Not only do you need to literally build a better car than the class that you’re trying enter (which Lexus did with the original LS, but Hyundai isn’t quite there with the Genesis and Equus), but you also need to get into the forward-thinking R&D with communications integration, autonomous travel, etc.
The next Genesis needs to surpass cars like the 5/E/A6 trio at their traditional strengths, and then on top of that offer unprecedented driver/passenger/user experience.
“...but then some of the materials look cheap and shared with other cars, which shows the compromise of the lower price...” is the game of a follower, not a leader. That game only works in Korea, where local mfrs have enormous business advantages over imported cars.

For people old enough to remember, Hyundai meant bad things in the 90s and early 2000s.
My sister-in-law and her husband both bought Hyundais together out of college, an Accent and an Excel. One was 2 years old, the other 3. They both collapsed into a pile of rubble before the loans were paid off. As the guy who had to come pick them up on the side of the road multiple times, or try to free a parking brake in the driveway after every rainy day, I decided long ago, never Hyundai. Not even once.

So often people on the FP have a crowd mentality. It’s like what happens in college for me. People don’t hate something. They like the idea of being someone that hates it.
Justin Bieber for example. A generation of people still hate him, you have to admit, some of his music is catchy.
Hyundai: Design is to personal taste, but looking at it objectively it’s a great car. But it’s popular to hate on Hyundai. So people hate Hyundai. It’s not their fault you don’t like the design but I challenge every FP hate to tell me definitively why they hate it.
Being from such a traditional family in old opinions, Mercedes and Lexus will be the only ones my dad loves. (My dad hates BMWs.) We may never get a Hyundai, but that doesn’t stop my dad from admitting it’s definitely a decent if not even great car.

I know this is wrong because it’s petty and smacks of insecurity but as of right now I wouldn’t drive a Kia or a Hyundai because they still have the subpar cheap image to me.
To me, when I see someone driving a Hyundai or a Kia, it makes me think they were too cheap or poor to get a Toyota instead of a Toyota knockoff. Like I said, I know it’s the wrong attitude and a shitty attitude to have because they have improved a ton over the last 20 years, but it is what it is I guess.

I like them. I’m thinking that a Genesis Coupe might be my next car. The 5.0 V8 from the sedan being put in the coupe would be sweet. It would probably compete with the American V8 pony cars.

people who blindly hate Korean cars now are just like the vets who started the anti Japan sentiment in the 60s.
Let them hold on to some outdated sterotypes... In twenty years gennys are going to be pretty sought after.

It’s because Hyundai is seriously misguided. They are trying to make The Hyundai of Luxury Cars.
Very, very few people want to buy The Hyundai of Luxury Cars. This is because Hyundais (Hyundaii?) are cheap, and luxury cars are not s’posed to be cheap. They are supposed to be expensive and more than anything they project an image. They make you feel important, much more important than the poors driving Hyundais and Kias.
There’s a good reason why BMW and Mercedes sell 25x as many vehicles in the same class, for $10k+ more per car. It’s because people shopping in this class don’t care about pricing. They care about image, which they get.
The Hyundai car itself is great. Everything else about it is crap.
